Inspiring Creativity:
Howdy friends,
It may surprise you to discover that I was born in Moseley, Birmingham, England.
At the other end of the village was Moseley Bog and nearby was a water mill.
Some 60 years earlier J. R. R. Tolkien lived within 300 yards of the mill between the ages 4 and 8, and would have seen it from his house.
The locale at that time was farmland and countryside.
He used the mill as a location in The Lord of the Rings for the Mill at Hobbiton.
Tolkien and his brother spent many hours playing around Sarehole Mill and being chased by the miller’s son.”
Moseley Bog is another area that Tolkien and his brother used to explore.
The Bog is a wonderful hidden part of Moseley and it was an ideal place for Tolkien’s childhood adventures.
He drew inspiration from Moseley Bog for the landscape of Middle-earth.
The environment from Sarehole left its mark upon Tolkien’s imagination.
Today Rachel and I live some 100 miles north of Middle-earth.
In our garden we have an old tree stump which we made into a feature.
A Hobbit-hotel with a door and windows just big enough for an imaginary being similar to a person but smaller and with hairy feet.
It’s the most luxurious Hobbit-hotel in the local area.
Recently our neighbours 2 grandsons came to visit.
On seeing the garden feature, the eldest of the 2 young boys enquired: What’s behind the door?
Oh, my!
Such innocence and imagination from the 5 year old youngster.
We need to understand how the younger generation works and what makes them tick.
We could use creative expression to hold their imagination and inspire faith.
Creative thinking could be steered in a innovative and engaging way.
Hey, we could learn from each other!
Why?
The heart and soul of our enthusiasm is having fun.
Come-on folks!
