Absorbed By The Whisper:
It was a sunny cool day in April, and the clocks were striking nine.
We hadn’t long been up and around, had breakfast, when our good friend the carpenter, who also has an interest in the cultivation of plants, unexpectedly arrived.
He pottered around the garden while Rachel cleaned our car.
We talked about important matters within the to and fro.
And so, due to the busyness around me, I decided to rest for a while.
I took a seat on our wooden garden bench, a safe place to be.
A breeze was blowing this way and that.
I could hear it blowing through our chimes, but I had no idea where it came from or where it was heading next.
Not too far away, I sensed the sound of a bumble-bee drawing near.
The noisy buzzing bee flew somewhat closer, until it too took time to rest.
And there I hesitated, undecided about my robust hairy guest.
But not before long, I found relief in the twittering and wheezing sounds produced by a green finch and her tag along friend.
They were soon accompanied by a favourite, a black bird singing his mellow song.
Such a social gathering.
And so we rested, for awhile, the bumble-bee and I.
That was, until the species decided without warning, to fly low over the earth.
Then, out of the blue, came a disruption.
It was almost imperceptible:
An airplane powered by jet engines rumbling through the sky.
It’s destination I did not know, I could only guess, imagine.
I thought back to those days as a young boy:
Perhaps it was a domestic journey.
Maybe, an international flight.
But then, my memories were broken.
The explanation, a neighbour began to mow grass.
A welcome splutter reverberated around my universe:
Sure, a mechanical sound of a petrol-fuelled motor preserved from bygone years.
Within the morning activity, numerous sounds caught my ears.
I became aware of a hum-drum flow of motor vehicles passing through the community.
Which way they were going, I could not tell.
The reason, a soft swishing sound blew this way and that.
Suddenly, in the middle distance, I detected a hydraulic release from a passenger bus.
It came to a stop.
It wasn’t stationary for long, before moving onward.
And so, until next time we meet, our friend, the carpenter, said his good byes.
And yes, Rachel continued her work, washing the car by hand.
As she went back and forth, her footsteps scrunched the graveled ground.
The intermittent clunk and thud of the opening and closing of car doors made her task seem rapid.
Her doings, energetic.
And still, the breeze blew this way and that.
Blowing through the chimes.
I could feel it breathing gently on my face.
Lightly on my hands.
The birds extended their hymn-song.
The hovering bee resumed his buzz:
A natural virtuoso.
A neighbourhood full of fuss.
Yet within the commotion my thoughts began to wander.
A slight movement of the air was blowing this way and that.
Still, a calm lengthy consideration occupied my mind.
It seemed as if time had whizzed by.
In reality, only a second short of one hour.
Then, I found myself reminded of a message from pages back yonder.
Maybe you recognise the paraphrase.
Or words quite similar:
“Step away from the traffic! Pause from doing your doings and get to know me, your heavenly Pa. You can be sure that I’ll be here.”
There, in that moment, I was lost in the conference.
Wholly absorbed by the whisper:
Occupied by small talk, a blessed exchange.
Immersed in hope and cheer.
Enclosed in Pa’s presence.
Enveloped in His love.
Then, I heard a familiar vocal utterance, galvanized with a gentle nudge.
It was Rachel.
Her busyness now complete.
My “activity” was interrupted.
“Would you like me to make you a cuppa?”
“Yes please,” came my self-conscious response:
But just as I moved from the garden bench, my social friend approached.
By chance, you may have met him:
He’s the quintessential buzz!
