Let The Lights Stay On:
To the ordinary guy on the average street:
To the servant engaged in civil administration:
To the citizen wherever you may be:
To the follower of Christ:
Defend those who are helpless and have no hope.
Be fair and give justice to the poor and homeless.
Protect the rights of the needy.
In other words, as Eugene Peterson would say:
“Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers.
Speak out for justice!
Stand up for the poor and destitute!”
Listen, this is a different aspect of worship.
This is what we should do:
Break the chains of injustice!
Get rid of exploitation in the workplace.
Free the oppressed.
Cancel debts.
Share our food with the hungry.
Invite the homeless poor into our homes.
Put clothes on the shivering ill-clad.
Be available to our own families.
Do this, and the lights will turn on.
Defend the wronged.
Lead prisoners to freedom.
Lift up the fallen.
Protect strangers.
Take the side of orphans and widows.
Reach out to the loveless.
Care for the depleted and empty.
Guard against corruption.
Get rid of unfair practices.
Quit blaming victims.
Quit gossiping about other people’s sins.
If we are generous with the hungry and start giving ourselves to the down-and-out, our lives will begin to glow in the darkness.
But let’s make sure we don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good.
Rather, let’s share what we have with others.
Remember, God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship – a different kind of “sacrifice” – that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets.
For-sure, God shows interest in every desire and impulse that colour our thoughts – and choreograph what we do.
So then, let’s roll up our sleeves, put our minds in gear.
Still, avoid going through the motions!
Remain passionate.
Live well before God.
Learn to live freely and lightly.
Understand that every part of our life is worship.
Every part of our everyday, ordinary life!
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
So, let the lights stay on!
Shine brightly.
Bring out the God colours in the world.
And then, see how God’s extraordinariness effectuates change.
Come-on!
Say yes!
With God’s help, we can make a difference!
See His glory in the high street!
Amen? Amen!
