Grampy’s Crop

Grampy’s Crop:

Pedal-pumping to generate the pressure bellows – moved the feet of the energetic musician.

That was the only way to get any sound from the old reed-organ.

As a young lad, I was intrigued by the way anyone could possibly pedal away, play, pull the stops, give praise, and all at the same time.

In fact, the small faithful crowd, who had gathered together in the snug room to sing the hymn-songs, were seemingly oblivious to the breath-taking exercise of the person making music.

Meanwhile, as visitors, my family and I appeared to double the size of the group of people.

Well, almost.

You see, this was where my aunts grandfather, affectionately known as Grampy Morgan, was the pastor for many a year.

But where? you may ask.

It was Moriah Chapel, Blaenavon, in the Eastern Valley of South Wales.

Well, that was forty years ago, if not more.

Much more!

Little did I realise then that some years later I too, would be serving as a pastor in the same town.

Okay, different congregation, different building, but same town.

Same roads.

Same gravel.

Same weeds.

Same kinda soil.

Same kinda people.

Anyhow, time has moved on, and it’s been a decade this month since the fellowship I pastored in the town was driven to fold.

Well, you can only imagine the joy I had, when hearing this week, that the Victory Church based in Cwmbran were planting a new church in Blaenavon, and in the same building where Grampy Morgan began.

Exciting stuff!

Sure-enough, the initial reports coming through are already encouraging.

So this got me a thinking, again.

I wonder if we’ve ever seen the complete results from the good seeds we and others have ever planted.

Possibly not.

Perhaps we’ve never seen as much fruit as we had hoped or expected.

Maybe this is your experience right now.

Maybe you’ve become demoralised because you haven’t seen speedy results in your ministry.

But you know, God is still at work no matter the numbers!

So, don’t lose heart.

Don’t be impatient either!

We often reap in a different season to when we first sowed.

Emergence and growth take time.

And yes, admittedly, without lifting a finger, we could even walk in on a field worked long and hard by others.

It’s a given!

Think about it.

We could harvests seeds sown by people we never knew.

For that matter, it could be an age before we begin to see a harvest at all!

What’s more, wee could sows seeds to be reaped by a generation we’ll never see.

Still, we’re recipients of past times, responsible for the times yet to come – that’s how we’re connected together.

Rather like a chain of associated things, of people and experiences.

So friends, thank God for those who have gone before us.

Envisage the spiritual insight that the saints of old often had.

Especially through the long years of striving and making an effort to reach a goal.

Pray for those who now follow.

May they strengthen their spiritual lives in a closer walk with the Saviour.

Just remember, God is at work, even when we can’t see what He’s doing.

Listen, faith is the assurance of things we have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities we’ve never seen.

So, here and now, with faith believing, let’s pray that the seed sown in our generation will fall on good earth and come up with a flourish, that produces a harvest that far exceeds our wildest dreams.

Yep, a bumper crop!

What an investment!

What a legacy!

What a dream!

What an extraordinary day!

Sacrifice is never easy.

An increase doesn’t always come instantly.

Yet, when it does, we give Him praise.

After-all, God, who causes the growth, is the only One who matters.

So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good.

At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.

Let’s simply invite God to walk through the fields of life with us.

Then, await.

Expect.

Wait again.

Anticipate.

Remember, if our lives honour the name of Jesus, He will honour us.

Oh yes!
