Sloppy Wet Kiss:
I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s great getting surprises.
Yep? Sure!
Well, Rachel and I were pleasantly surprised way back last year, when an unknown person left us some goodies by our front porch.
Although we never “discovered” who was behind the considerate act of kindness, we really enjoyed and appreciated the runner beans, cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes and so on.
Anyhow, as I gathered my thoughts for this weeks encouragement, I came across a tradition which seems to be prevalent throughout the state of Nebraska.
Apparently, on May Day, folks there leave May Baskets by their neighbours’ front door before running away!
The baskets are usually filled with candy or pop-corn, sometimes freshly picked flowers, or even home-baked cup-cakes.
Nothing expensive or over-the-top!
On the whole, neighbours love the little gesture and folks have a blast passing them out.
Why, believe it or not, historians reckon, if the giver is “caught” in the act, the recipient must greet the giver with a sloppy wet kiss!
Oh-boy!
Now, this idea may have taken off throughout the Midwestern state on the Great Plains, but I’m not so certain it would take off here!
Maybe!
It would be great if it did!
It doesn’t take much to brighten someone’s day.
So, for future reference, I like cup-cakes!
Still, let’s consider the friendliness, approachableness and generousness of Jesus – who recognises our acts of kindness, and considers what we have done to others as done to Him:
Offering food.
Providing water.
Welcoming the stranger.
Sharing clothing.
Giving care.
Comforting the unfree.
Yep!
Just imagine, as we’re “found” doing these things, Jesus meets us with a sloppy wet kiss!
What an impulse!
Think about it.
Who is your neighbour?
Who is in need?
As we love one another, we love Him, and He smothers us with kisses!!
Tee-hee!
What an insight!
And to think, at the heart of this activity, we “find” Jesus, and not ourselves.
